As one of the largest spending categories in our real lives, gaming is expected to be the next big wave beyond all doubt and most ambitious VCs are betting big on this. I tracked the most active funds investing in Web 3 games and surprisingly find out that famous Web 2 gaming brands are also exploring the space.
Some key figures:
20 most active Web 2 / Web 3 funds investing in crypto games.
6 Web 2 gaming funds (including a16z game fund one)
14 Web 3 native funds (including guilds)
~$3 billion fund allocated for investing in crypto games.
50% from Web 2 gaming funds
50% from Web 3 natives funds (including Animoca who raised $445m in total)
Nearly 1/2 founders of the funds have no gaming-related experience before.
2/3 Web 2 gaming funds established an independent fund focusing on Web 3 games.
In terms of direct crypto game investments, Bitkraft & GriffinGamingPartners are the most aggressive ones among Web 2 investors. Additionally, their tastes are not the same if you look at their portfolios.
On the contrary, Web 3 investors are willing to take more risk and we can see a high degree of portfolio overlap.
